I Need Your Help…

OKay, so I took some time off, and I’ve come back to CSG with the notion of rebuilding the site from the ground up. I started with the new Free Report over there (—>) and, as I’ve mentioned, I’m looking into a complete re-design of the site.

logo-2A designer friend and I were batting a few thoughts around, and he came up with this new logo as a starting point. Before I weigh in with my thoughts, I wanted to get your opinion.

If we decide to go this route, there would be a whole new site designed around this theme…and, yes, the predominant color would be swiss-army-knife red.

So, what do you think…do you love it? Do you hate it? Does it give you flashbacks of MacGyver? Or church?

Don’t hold back! I really wanna know! Leave a comment below…

Like the overall look. Book does look a bit bible-ly with the plus or cross. When I think of survival guide I first think of large friendly letters for some reason…think that would be a good idea, large(r) friendlier letters. Just my opinion so don’t read too much into it.

Thanks Ben…but this is just a rough-up of an idea…and it’s not the full-sized graphic (http://copywritersurvivalguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/logo-2-300×230.jpg). More of a starting point.

And I asked for your opinion. You’re not going to offend me by giving it ;)

It looks like your designer friend slapped this together in 5 minutes.

Chris: In all fairness, he did. And I’m pretty sure he’d been drinking heavily at the time.

It’s a good first stab(pardon my pun),but it definitely looks church-y and would interfere with the message you’re trying to convey.

Why not go with a more literal interpretation? The outdoors, wilderness, where the adventure-loving free lance copywriter goes to find his bread and butter, clients. Play with the idea of the SAK as a pen, you know, maybe your tagline carved into a tree.

Here are some fonts I looked up on my computer that might work well with the survivor theme: Stencil Std., Rockwell Extra Bold, Resevoir Grunge, Juniper Normal, Impact, Franklin Gothic. Good luck!

Pat: Thanks for the feedback (and the research on the fonts…I really appreciate that). I actually like the outdoors-y/adventure angle, and it plays into the earlier posts more directly than in the more recent entries.

    Thanks again for chiming in!

    A LITTLE CLARIFICATION:
Someone wrote to be chiding me a bit for deriding the work of my designer a few comments above with this little exchange:

    ># Chris on October 30th
    >It looks like your designer
    >friend slapped this together
    >in 5 minutes.

    ># Danny on October 30th
    >Chris: In all fairness, he
    >did. And I’m pretty sure
    >he’d been drinking heavily
    >at the time.

To clarify, this “Chris” IS the aforementioned “designer friend.” ;) And this was by no means to be the finished logo design.

It was, quite literally, slapped together in about five minutes (give or take) while we were talking casually about the re-design.

Before we went any further with it, I though “hey, let’s take to to the readers and see what they think.” And that brings us pretty much up to date.

So…that’s one vote for an “outdoors/adventure” style overhaul (and many, many votes against the above design, including some…interesting..ones I’ve gotten via email, which I will share here shortly).

So keep it coming! I still wanna hear what YOU think.

I have to agree with Ben. My first reaction was that it looked like a logo for a bible study group. Back to the drawing board. Sorry!

Oh yeah, it most definitely looks “churchy.” I wish Danny didn’t call me out though, I really wanted to continue slamming my work in a public forum …don’t think that’s ever been done before.?

Well, I’m going to give it another go. Maybe over the weekend.

I sure hope the criticism continues. Bring it on. I’d return the favor in a heartbeat! :)
